A parable is a short story or anecdote which is crafted with a specific purpose:

  1. the subject matter is sometimes declared from the beginning and sometimes revealed gradually. Mat 13:31 Luk 10:30
  2. sometimes it is used to convict the hearer of their their sins. 2Sa 12:1-4,9
  3. the story is crafted to capture attention and drive home the lesson by being surprising and using exaggerated terms. Mat 13:31
  4. its purpose is often to convey a single, memorable principle that applies universally across various situations and time periods. Mat 7:24-27
  5. characters and events are often symbolic, representing broad truths rather than mapping directly onto specific events. Mat 13:18-23
  6. the imagery is tailored to the audience’s understanding which may reduces its effectiveness for other cultures. Spiritual understanding and openness to divine revelation may also be required to appreciate the purpose or point. Mat 13:11-15
  7. while rooted in the original context, the significance may also extend well beyond that setting. Luk 10:36-37
  8. the audience may or may not understand its relevance depending on their attitudes. Mat 13:16-17
  9. understanding lies beneath the surface and often requires reflection or spiritual insight. Luk 8:9-10
  10. Jesus uses ‘spiritual blindness’ of some to keep the Mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven hidden from some. Mat 13:13-15
